Henning Pawel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henning Pawel (born July 14, 1944 in Bernheide, Wittenberge district in Mecklenburg , today part of the municipality of Lanz in Brandenburg ) is a German children's book author and writer .

Life and literary successes

Pawel grew up as a child of German-Jewish parents in Thuringia . After training as a repro photographer, he worked as a driver and then studied law and cultural studies. From 1974 to 1982 he worked as a district councilor for culture in Erfurt and as a journalist.

Since 1983 he has been writing radio plays, texts for cabaret and folk festivals as well as children's plays as a freelance writer. From 1990 to 1993 Pawel was chairman of the Thuringian Writers' Association and the Thuringian Literary Society .

His stories did not appear in print until 1991 after German reunification , initially the satirical novel Eine Bande irrer Freunde and in 1992 the children's book Joschkas Hund . For Joschka's dog , Pawel received the Oldenburg Children's and Young People's Book Prize in 1991 ; for the Forbidden Summer 2001 the Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize of the city of Braunschweig. At the same time, his Stasi work became known. Thereupon he decided not to accept the award.

Unofficial employee of the GDR State Security

According to documents from the Ministry for State Security of the GDR , Pawel had been an unofficial employee under the code name IM Oertel since 1977 . Pawel himself initially denied this, but later admitted that he had worked as Oertel in the 1970s. On his website, he states that he has always behaved in an uncooperative manner towards the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and has not betrayed anyone. Henning Pawel himself had been observed by the Stasi since 1965.

In spring 2014, new allegations against Pawel became known: The escape helper Karl-Heinz Debach from Nürtingen was arrested in 1976 in the GDR and sentenced to four years in prison, Pawel played a decisive role.
