Life

origin

Georg Abraham von Arnim (1651–1734)

His parents were George Wilhelm von Arnim (* 1612; † December 26, 1673) and his wife Barbara Sabina, born von Hohendorff (1620–1693) from the Falkenhagen family . Jakob Dietlof von Arnim , colonel of the Kurbrandenburg cavalry, was his brother.

Military career

At the age of 16 he left Boitzenburg and joined Friedrich Wilhelm's footguard , in the regiment under the command of Schlabrendorf. After three years, Arnim was looking for adventure and asked permission to join the army of the Bishop of Osnabrück Ernst August . Permission was also given in 1671. He was currently in a dispute with the city of Braunschweig and so he became an ensign in the "Degenfeld" regiment. After the conquest of Braunschweig, Arnim was released again. In 1672 he let himself be recruited for troops that Friedrich Wilhelm wanted to send to Holland. There he became a lieutenant in the “von Götzen” regiment. In 1674 Arnim became a captain , fought in the imperial army against France and helped with the siege of Breisach. In 1674 the Northern War broke out. So Arnim took part in the Battle of Fehrbellin in 1675 . In 1676 he was with the troops that occupied Wolgast and during the siege of Anklam he was seriously injured in the knee when the fortress was attacked.

As early as 1677 he was there again during the siege and conquest of Stettin, in which his right shoulder was injured. In 1678 Arnim took part in the landing on Rügen and the subsequent siege of Stralsund . The “von Götzen” regiment was left behind after conquering the city with Arnim, who had meanwhile been promoted to major , as a crew. After the peace treaty he was transferred to the "von Schöning" regiment, which was located in Magdeburg.

In 1686 Arnim moved to Hungary with the regiment in support of the emperor. There he took part in the siege of Ofen . His left arm was seriously injured when the city was attacked. The elector made him lieutenant colonel and after his recovery he returned to the army. In November 1688 he marched with the Guard Regiment (the von Schöning regiment was absorbed) to Saxony to fight against the French under the command of General Field Marshal von Flemming . In 1689 the regiments went to the Brandenburg Main Army in Kaiserswerth to support the siege, after which he was involved in the siege of Bonn . In the winter camp in Aachen he was promoted to colonel and in 1690 he became commandant of Berlin.

With the Nine Years' War Arnim came in 1692 to the army to Brabant, where he in the 1692 Battle of Steenkerke and 1693 in the Battle of Neerwinden fights. The siege of Huy followed in 1694, followed by the siege of Namur in 1695 . In 1695 he was appointed major general. He stayed with the army in Brabant until the Treaty of Rijswijk in 1697 . Then he returned to Berlin, where he was still in command. During the War of the Spanish Succession , he was sent to Poland in 1702 with the army of the Duke of Holstein-Beck . In 1704 Arnim was appointed lieutenant general and returned to Berlin. In 1705 he was given the command of the Prussian troops for the Rhine campaign against France and was commanded by Ludwig von Baden to the Moselle.

After his return to Prussia, Arnim became commander of the newly established body regiment of the king on February 2, 1707. In 1708 he succeeded Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau as commander of the Prussian troops in Italy. After the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the regiment was named "von Arnim". When the Great Northern War reached Brandenburg in 1715 , he and his troops moved to the siege of Stralsund and Stettin. On May 23, 1715 the king appointed him General of the Infantry in the camp in front of Stettin and made him Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle . Arnim was given command of the troops that occupied Wollin and captured Peenemünde from August 21 to 22 .

After the peace he moved to his Suckow estate, which he now rarely leaves. On May 28, 1728 he was appointed field marshal general. The aged marshal now applied for his retirement, which the letter of September 21, 1731 allowed with all honors. He started building a baroque mansion in Suckow, but died on May 1, 1734. After his death, a large funeral procession was committed through Berlin. He himself was buried in Boitzenburg .
