Heinrich Wilhelm Rotermund (born March 1, 1761 in Schleiz , † April 25, 1848 in Bremen ) was a German author and pastor. He was best known through biographical reference works on scholars in northern Germany.

biography

Rotermund was born in Schleiz as the son of an administrative officer, who, as the son put it in his self-description, “councilor and Aedilis, as well as chief inspector and tax collector Johann Gottlieb” and attended the Lyceum there . In 1779 he went to Jena to study Protestant theology , philosophy and history . After the death of his father, however, he had to break off his studies and took a position as a tutor with the von Witzleben family in Wolmirstedt . In 1783 he continued his studies in Leipzig and in 1784 accepted the assignment to accompany the two sons of the Bremen Senator Wichelhausen on a two-year educational trip from Dessau via Bohemia , Vienna , Bratislava , Holland and Brabant to Bremen.

After completing the trip, he stayed in northern Germany and was rector of the Halepaghen School in Buxtehude in 1786 and pastor of Bremen Cathedral in 1789 . By 1827 he rose from fourth to first pastor ( Primarius ) there. In addition to his work at the cathedral, the associated orphanage and the cathedral school, he developed an extensive literary activity in various fields. According to Johann Friedrich Iken , for this purpose he got up every day at 4 a.m. In 1818 he lists 71 of his own printed matter.

In addition to sermons and small occasional pamphlets, he mainly dealt with the Reformation and the history of Bremen and Hanover. Especially important are his works Lexicon of all scholars who have lived in Bremen since the Reformation and Das Gelehre Hannover, or Lexicon of writers who have lived in the Kingdom of Hanover since the Reformation . His scientific writings, however, were soon considered outdated.

In 1820 Rotermund was appointed Doctor of Philosophy and Magister of Liberal Arts by the Georg August University of Göttingen in recognition of his literary activities, and in 1823 he was named Doctor of Theology. In addition, he became an honorary member of the historical association for Lower Saxony in 1836.
