Shaun Peter Derry (born December 6, 1977 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player and current coach . As a player, he was active for the first division clubs Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers , among others .

Player career

Shaun Derry began his playing career in 1995 with his hometown club Notts County . In his second season he rose with County as bottom of the table in the fourth division. Between January 1998 and March 2000 he played 72 league games for the second division club Sheffield United . After another stint at Portsmouth FC , also playing in the second division , Shaun Derry moved to Crystal Palace on August 1, 2002 . With his new team he reached promotion to the first division in the Football League First Division 2003/04 . Palace had defeated West Ham United 1-0 in the play-off final in front of 72,523 spectators at Wembley . The promoted team could not hold the league in the following season and was relegated straight back from the 2004/05 Premier League . The only used in seven first division games Shaun Derry had already been awarded on December 24, 2004 to the relegation-threatened second division Nottingham Forest .

On February 18, 2005 Derry moved to the second division Leeds United . In the Football League Championship 2005/06 Derry moved into a play-off final for the second time in his career. In contrast to 2004 with Crystal Palace, however, he lost on May 21, 2006 with Leeds 3-0 to Watford FC and thus missed promotion to the Premier League. In the following season , the team's performance deteriorated drastically and culminated in relegation to the third division. Shaun Derry missed the final months of the season due to an injury in January 2007.

Between November 2007 and June 2010 he played for the second time in his career for the second division club Crystal Palace. On June 22, 2010, he signed a two-year contract with the Queens Park Rangers . With the Rangers, regular Shaun Derry (45 league games) won the championship title in the Football League Championship 2010/11 and rose for the second time in his career in the first division. In the 2011/12 Premier League , the newcomer secured relegation thanks to a point ahead of the Bolton Wanderers . In the 2012/13 season , however, followed as bottom of the table relegation to the second division. Shaun Derry was used in a total of 47 league games in the two first division years.

Coaching career

On November 6, 2013, the relegation-threatened English third division Notts County announced the commitment of Shaun Derry as a player-coach. The 35-year-old midfielder was on loan at the second division club Millwall at the time . For the return to his hometown club in Nottingham , he accepted the possible premature end of his playing career, as he is not allowed to appear for a third club within one season due to the rules of the Football League . He was released there on March 23, 2005 after he won only three of the previous 24 league games with the club and was one place before the relegation places.

In November 2015 Derry took over the fourth division Cambridge United as the successor to Richard Money and finished ninth and eleventh with the club for the first two seasons. In February 2018 he reached a mutual agreement with those responsible for the association to terminate the contract.
