David "Dave" Bassett (born September 4, 1944 in the London Borough of Harrow , England ) is a former English football player and coach . He trained u. a. the FC Wimbledon , Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest .

Coaching career

Wimbledon FC

After a less than successful playing career, Dave Bassett took over the coaching position at the English fourth division club Wimbledon in early 1981 . His activity was quickly crowned with success and led to promotion to the third division. After the direct relegation in the 1981/82 season, the team succeeded under Bassett an excellent year that led to the championship in the fourth division. The new start in the third division was much more successful this time and led to the direct march through to the second division through a second place in the table behind Oxford United . The club was also able to assert itself in the second division and placed itself in the middle of the table at the end of the 1984/85 season. In the season 1985/86 the previous high point in the coaching career of Dave Bassett followed. With a third place behind Norwich City and Charlton Athletic , Wimbledon secured promotion to the English first division. The club's soaring continued in the Football League First Division 1986/87 and led the team to sixth place. After this excellent season, Bassett faced a new challenge and took over the coaching position at league rivals Watford FC . Wimbledon FC won the FA Cup title against Liverpool FC in 1988 under Basset's successor Bobby Gould . Key players such as Dave Beasant , Vinnie Jones , John Fashanu and Dennis Wise had already been brought in by Bassett. His work in Watford was unsuccessful and led to Bassett's dismissal in January 1988.

Sheffield United

During the 1987/88 season he took over the coaching position at the English second division club Sheffield United . There he could not prevent relegation to the third division. But already in the following year his activity was fruitful and led to a direct return to the Second Division. In the 1989/90 season this success was even increased by promotion to the First Division. Sheffield secured the promotion ticket by finishing second behind Leeds United . The club played first class again after 14 years and celebrated their return to the Football League First Division in 1990/91 with a thirteenth place in the table. In the 1991/92 season , Bassett even led his team to ninth place. United also established itself in the newly introduced Premier League in the first year before relegation in the Premier League in 1993/94 by a third from last place. After a failed recovery in 1994/95 and a false start in the 1995/96 season, his activity in Sheffield ended in December 1995.

In February 1996 he took over the coaching position at Crystal Palace . He ended his work with the second division team in March 1997 to train the relegation-threatened first division club Nottingham Forest .

Nottingham Forest

Forest had to cope with the departure of striker Stan Collymore after an excellent third place as a promoted player in the Premier League in 1994/95 . Kevin Campbell from Arsenal FC, signed by coach Frank Clark , did not turn out to be the hoped-for replacement. The season in the Premier League 1996/97 was unfortunate from the start. Even after Clark's dismissal and the assumption of the coaching post by player-coach Stuart Pearce , the success came only for a short time. This was followed by relegation and departure from Stuart Pearce after 12 years in Nottingham . In the following season, Bassett once again proved his skills as a promotion coach and led the team back to the Premier League as champions. The storm duo Pierre van Hooijdonk (29 goals) and the finally accurate Kevin Campbell (23 goals) made a significant contribution to the promotion. The return to the Premier League in 1998/99 , however, was not bad omens. Bassett sold elementary players like Campbell (Trabzonspor) and Colin Cooper (Middlesbrough FC) and thus attracted the displeasure of star player van Hooijdonk. This refused to run for Forest at the beginning of the season and only came to his first appearance on matchday 12. The team quickly found themselves at the bottom of the table, which led to the dismissal of Bassett in early 1999.

From May 1999 to December 2000 he coached the second division club Barnsley and narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League with his new team in the 1999/2000 season due to a play-off defeat against Ipswich Town .

In October 2001, Bassett took over the coaching post at the relegation-threatened first division club Leicester City . After relegation to the second division, he took a position in the management of the club. In late October 2007 he took over the position of assistant coach to his former player Dennis Wise at Leeds United . After Wise was fired at the end of January 2008, Dave Bassett's last coaching career ended.
