Colin Terence Cooper (born February 28, 1967 in Durham , England ) is a former English football player and current coach . As a player, he has worked for Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough FC, among others . With the latter club he advanced to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2006 and won the League Cup in 2004 . In Middlesbrough, the two-time international also worked as an assistant coach.

Player career

Middlesbrough FC 1984-1991

Colin Cooper started his playing career in 1984 with the English second division club Middlesbrough FC . His first appearances for his team, he played in the 1985/86 season, in which Middlesbrough relegated to the third division. 1986/87 Cooper contributed his part to the immediate return of the club to the Football League Second Division with 46 missions . This performance experienced an increase a year later, when Cooper and his team reached the direct march through to the First Division. As third in the table, they made it into the first play-off round against Bradford City , in which Middlesbrough prevailed with 1: 2 and 2: 0. In the final, the table 19 waited with Chelsea . the first division. After a 2-0 home win and a 0-1 away defeat, the promotion to the first division was perfect. Relegation could not be secured by the newcomer in the First Division in 1988/89 and Colin Cooper (35 games / 2 goals) rose with his team in the second division. The following year brought the club a very bad series and a barely achieved relegation in the second division. After another season in the second division, Cooper (32/0) moved to Millwall FC in 1991 for £ 300,000 .

Nottingham Forest

Millwall also played in the second division at this time and only reached 15th place in the table with Cooper (36/2) in the 1991/92 season. The coming year saw an increase in performance, but the ascent with seventh place was again missed. Colin Cooper then went to Nottingham Forest for £ 1,700,000 . Forest was relegated in the newly created Premier League 1992/93 after 16 years of first class in the now called First Division second division. Coach legend Brian Clough had subsequently announced his resignation. Under the new coach Frank Clark , Forest managed direct recovery with Cooper (37 games / 7 goals) as second in the table. The club from Nottingham was also able to shine with strong performances in the Premier League 1994/95 and took a very good third place after champions Blackburn Rovers and runner-up Manchester United .

Colin Cooper (35/1) had another strong season and completed two international matches for the English national team against Sweden and Brazil in June 1995 . The 1995/96 Premier League was finished satisfactorily with ninth place and the team also reached the quarter-finals of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup . There, the later title holder FC Bayern Munich was a size too big for the team from the East Midlands . In the following season Cooper (36/2) could not confirm these performances with his team and rose as bottom of the table in the second division. As four years before, Forest managed to return directly to the Premier League in 1997/98 . Colin Cooper (35/5) decided to make another move, however, and went to his former club Middlesbrough FC for £ 2,500,000.

Middlesbrough FC 1998-2006

A good placement in the first of eight years in Middlesbrough was achieved in the Premier League 1998/99 with ninth place in the table. In the 2003/04 season , Colin Cooper won the League Cup with his team and qualified for the 2004/05 UEFA Cup . Middlesbrough defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the final at Wembley . However, in contrast to his team-mates Mark Schwarzer , Gareth Southgate , Boudewijn Zenden and Gaizka Mendieta, Cooper was not used. In the Premier League 2004/05 Cooper reached seventh place with his team that could thus participate in the UEFA Cup 2005/06 . After the 2005/06 season, in which he came only to one league use, Colin Cooper ended his playing career at the age of 39. He was able to see how his club reached the final of the UEFA Cup, but lost it 4-0 to Sevilla FC in Eindhoven .

Coaching career

Hartlepool United

After initially serving on the coaching staff of Middlesbrough FC, Colin Cooper worked from June 2009 to May 2010 as assistant coach of his club under coach Gordon Strachan . After working in the Bradford City coaching team , he returned to Middlesbrough as a youth coach in September 2011.

On May 24, 2013 Cooper was introduced as the new coach of the third division relegated Hartlepool United .
