Boudewijn Zenden (born August 15, 1976 in Maastricht ) is a former Dutch soccer player and today's soccer coach .

youth

Zenden played in his youth for the amateur club Leonidas and was recruited by MVV Maastricht in 1985 . In 1987 he moved to the PSV Eindhoven youth academy .

In addition to football, he was also active in judo . He got his black belt at the age of 14 and was three times winner in his home province Limburg . At 16, he decided against judo to advance his football career.

Club career

In 1993 he moved to the PSV professional team. As a left midfielder, he replaced Jan Wouters in 1996 , as he left the club. From this time he was a regular player in the club. Zenden was an important part of the team in winning the 1997 championship. In the same year he was awarded the Dutch Talent of the Year award. After another season in which he scored twelve goals in 23 games, he moved to FC Barcelona in 1998 .

At Barcelona he was part of a large number of Dutch players under coach Louis van Gaal . Since Marc Overmars played in his previous position, Zenden was mostly on the field as the left attacking defender. In this position he was very successful, so that he took over the regular place from Sergi Barjuán . After Louis van Gaal left the club in 2000, he played less and less for Barcelona.

In the summer of 2001 he moved to Chelsea for £ 7.5 million . In the three years that he played for the club from London, he did not manage to get a permanent place. During this time he had several injuries.

Chelsea loaned Zenden to Middlesbrough FC for the 2003/04 season . Here he was successful again as a player and even scored the winning goal in the final of the League Cup against the Bolton Wanderers . The club thus secured its first major title. His contract ended in the summer of 2004 with Chelsea, so he moved to Middlesbrough FC on a free transfer. At the English club he played in attacking midfield and was on the field in 36 league games.

In summer 2005 he moved to Liverpool after his contract with Middlesbrough expired. There he plays again in the left midfield. In December 2005, he injured his knee so that he could not play for the rest of the season. After another knee operation at the end of November 2006, he was out for another six weeks, but was back on the field in the final stages of the Champions League. He scored the first penalty in the semifinals against Chelsea and was on the pitch in the Champions League final against AC Milan .

On May 24, 2007, Liverpool FC coach Rafael Benítez announced that the contract with Zenden would not be renewed. On July 6, Zenden signed with Olympique Marseille for two years .

At Marseille he was not given a regular place and was only on the field 13 times in the 2008/09 season. After the end of the 2008/09 season he was without a club. He said he wanted to end his career in England after Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth FC showed interest. He has been with Sunderland FC since October 2009.

On May 17, 2010 it was announced that Zenden had extended its contract for another year. This contract expired in 2011 and was not extended, Zenden remained without a club.

In September 2012, he kept himself fit for the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen , with whose team boss Sami Hyypiä he was part of the team at Liverpool FC. However, there was no commitment.

On October 22, 2012 he was appointed assistant coach at Chelsea FC.

National team

Zenden played 54 caps for the Dutch national team from 1997 to 2004 . He made his first international match on April 30, 1997 as part of the qualification for the 1998 World Cup against San Marino.

With the national team he took part in the 1998 World Cup and the European Football Championships in 2000 and 2004 .

He has not been nominated for the national team since September 2004 and the injury in December 2005 ruined all chances of being nominated for the 2006 World Cup.

Coaching career

Zenden was Rafael Benítez's assistant coach at Chelsea from November 22, 2012 to June 30, 2013 . Most recently, he was in charge of the second team at PSV Eindhoven from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, also as an assistant coach.
