Sergi Barjuán i Esclusa , better known as Sergi (born December 28, 1971 in Les Franqueses del Vallès ), is a former Spanish football player .

Career

society

Sergi was trained at La Masia , the youth academy of FC Barcelona . In 1993 he made the leap into the club's first team. In his very first season, the left defender was able to celebrate the Spanish championship and was in the final of the Champions League in 1994 , which was clearly lost 4-0 to AC Milan .

In 1996 he was with his club in the final of the Copa del Rey , which was lost to Atlético Madrid . Since these were champions in the same year, the club still qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup , which was won with Sergi on the field in the following season by beating defending champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 . In 1997 and 1998 Sergi won the Spanish Cup with his club. In 1998, when he won the championship, he won the double and a year later Sergi was again able to call himself Spanish champion.

In 2002 Sergi said goodbye to Barcelona and moved to league rivals Atlético Madrid. In 2005 he ended his career there after a total of 353 league games in which he scored 6 goals.

International

Because of his good performance in the 1993/94 season, Sergi was appointed by Javier Clemente to the squad of the Spanish national team for the 1994 World Cup . As a result, he was part of the squad at every tournament. He was at EURO 96 , the 1998 World Cup and EURO 2000 . He played a total of 56 international matches for Spain, scoring one goal.
