John Fashanu (born September 18, 1962 in Kensington , London ) is a former English football player and current television presenter . The ex- center forward and FA Cup winner with FC Wimbledon from 1988 is of Nigerian - Guiana origin and brother of Justin Fashanu, who died in 1998 .

Athletic career

After their parents separated, John Fashanu and his one year older brother Justin were sent to the children's aid organization Barnardo's . From the age of five he found a new home with the Jackson couple in the small town of Shropham - near Attleborough in the county of Norfolk .

Fashanu made his first professional football steps in 1979 at Norwich City . From there he was loaned to the New Zealand club Miramar Rangers in 1983 during the free time in England and then to Crystal Palace , before he was drawn to Millwall FC via Lincoln City in the British capital . He made his debut there on December 15, 1984 and scored 19 goals in 65 competitive games by 1986.

Fashanu's best years followed during his career when he moved to Wimbledon FC and became part of the self-proclaimed " Crazy Gang ", which at that time had made a series of promotions and had now arrived in the First Division . In a sensational FA Cup final, he and his team defeated the high favorites Liverpool FC in 1988 and Fashanu scored a 2-1 defeat at Wimbledon's revenge in the Charity Shield a short time later. In May 1989 Fashanu played his only two internationals for England on the occasion of a friendly tournament against Chile and Scotland . By 1994 Fashanu had scored 126 goals and formed an effective storm duo , especially with Wimbledon "veteran" Alan Cork . Fashanu struck his opponents - especially in comparison to his brother Justin - less with technical skills, than with a high level of commitment and sometimes rough style of play.

Fashanu joined Aston Villa in the summer of 1994 and made headlines the following year when the tabloid The Sun accused him of postponing football matches - the other accused were ex-Wimbledon teammates Hans Segers and FC Bruce Grobbelaar Liverpool. Although the trial did not substantiate the allegation, the accused had to bear their own costs. Injury problems had already caused John Fashanu to end his career at this point.

After football

After his active career, Fashanu switched to television moderation. He presented the series "Gladiators", an offshoot of the US American Gladiators , on British TV with Ulrika Jonsson . In 2003 he was featured in the second season of " I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here "; later he launched the reality TV show “Fash's Football Challenge”, which accompanied the ex-soccer player as a coach of an amateur soccer team. Also in 2003, he produced a series for ITV1 that was based on the American format Man vs. Beast was ajar, but never aired after protests by animal rights organizations. Since 2007 Fashanu has been leading the show on the Nigerian version of Deal or No Deal .

In Nigeria, Fashanu stayed with football. He was a member of the Nigeria Football Association and was also chairman of Barry Town in Wales . To this end, he dealt with corruption in Nigeria in the 1980s and 1990s - the final report became known as the "Fashanu Report". Fashanu was also actively involved in investigating the genocide in Rwanda .
