David John "Dave" Beasant (* 20th March 1959 in London , England ) is a former English football player , among others at FC Wimbledon , Chelsea , Southampton FC and Nottingham Forest worked. For the English national football team , he played two international matches.
Player career
Wimbledon FC
Dave Beasant began his professional career in 1979 at Wimbledon FC , which had just been promoted to the third division Third Division. After relegation to the fourth division, the club rose to the second division in the 1983/84 season. After a twelfth place in the first second division year 1985/86 succeeded in promotion to the First Division as third in the table behind Norwich City and Charlton Athletic . At the age of 27, Beasant had made it to the top English league. Wimbledon FC reached a sixth place in the Football League First Division 1986/87 as a promoted team ; the next season they finished seventh. The club was even more successful in the FA Cup 1987/88 , in which team captain Beasant led his team to the title. In the final, the team led by Vinnie Jones , John Fashanu , Dennis Wise and Laurie Cunningham beat Liverpool 1-0 with a goal from Lawrie Sanchez . This game made Beasant twice in the history of the FA Cup: First he saved a penalty from John Aldridge in the 60th minute , the first penalty saved in an FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, which had been played there since 1923. He was also the first goalkeeper to receive the FA Cup from Princess Diana as team captain .
After the end of the season he decided to change clubs and went to Newcastle United . The time of the change turned out to be unfavorable, because Newcastle rose in the 1988/89 season as bottom of the table in the Second Division. Beasant joined Chelsea in the course of the season (January 1989) .
Chelsea FC
Under coach Bobby Campbell , the club from Beasant's hometown London was playing in the second division at this time. However, Chelsea had an excellent year that led to promotion to the First Division with 17 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City . The following year, the team reached a fifth place in the Football League First Division 1989/90 . In the two following years, Chelsea could not maintain this level and spent the time in the middle of the table. Under coach Ian Porterfield , Beasant lost his regular place in goal and moved to Grimsby Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan for some time before joining Southampton FC in 1993 .
Southampton FC
In Southampton, Dave Beasant spent the next few years in the Premier League, which was newly introduced in 1992, mostly in midfield or the lower third of the table. In the Premier League 1995/96 only the better goal difference ensured the relegation against Manchester City . After another just achieved relegation, he moved to Nottingham Forest in 1997 .
Nottingham Forest
The team from the East Midlands was relegated to the Second Division under player- coach Stuart Pearce last year. The now 38-year-old Dave Beasant managed with his new team, however, the direct promotion through a first place in front of Middlesbrough FC . The following year in the Premier League 1998/99 led to another relegation as bottom of the table. Beasant also lost his place in goal to Mark Crossley towards the end of the season . Under the new coach David Platt , Nottingham missed promotion in 1999/2000. Beasant shared the goalkeeping position again with Crossley. He completed the 2000/2001 season once again as a goalkeeper and moved to Portsmouth FC at the end of the season at the age of 42 .
There Beasant replaced the fatally injured goalkeeper Aaron Flahavan . After further short-term engagements, he ended his long playing career in the 2003/04 season.
Stevenage FC
On May 2, 2015, at the age of 56, he was nominated for a play-off game by Stevenage FC .
English national football team
In 1989 Dave Beasant played two international matches for the England team. National coach Bobby Robson nominated the goalkeeper, who works for Chelsea , for the 1990 World Cup in Italy to replace the injured David Seaman . There he was, however, in the shadow of the legendary Peter Shilton and did not appear in the World Cup. England failed in the semifinals against eventual world champions Germany. Under the new coach Graham Taylor , he played no more role.
