Aaron Adam Flahavan (born December 15, 1975 in Southampton , † August 5, 2001 in Bournemouth ) was an English football goalkeeper. His younger brother Darryl (* 1978) was also a goalkeeper in professional football.
Career
Aaron Flahavan played for Southampton FC during his school years and joined local rivals Portsmouth FC at the age of 18 . In February 1994 he received a professional contract with Portsmouth and came on January 28, 1995 in the four-round game of the FA Cup against Leicester City to his competitive debut, when he replaced the expelled Alan Knight 20 minutes before the end of the game . After he had remained without a competitive game in the 1995/96 season, he started the second division season 1996/97 as the club's regular goalkeeper. At the turn of the year 1996/1997 he lost his place in the gate to the experienced Knight when a clear loss of form became apparent. In the following season, Flahavan, who had good reflexes and excellent control of the penalty area, was in competition with Knight and came from the start of the season until October and again from February, when he consolidated his place in goal with four games in a row without conceding a goal. for use.
At the beginning of the 1998/99 season he was still a regular goalkeeper, but again fluctuations in performance ensured that he was ousted by Knight in October and later the loaned Andy Petterson was preferred to him. On his return to goal in February 1999, he broke his ribs and jaw in a clash with Iffy Onuora against Swindon Town and was out until the end of the season. Flahavan probably suffered from narcolepsy , so he suddenly collapsed on September 12, 1998 in a 5-2 win against Swindon without outside influence during the game, but ended the game, about a year later occurred again in a league cup pairing against the Blackburn Rovers such an incident. Also due to his collapse against Blackburn, he was hardly used at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, with a coach change from Alan Ball to Tony Pulis at the turn of the year, a new goalkeeper was signed with Russell Hoult , who was preferred for the rest of the season . Only after Hoult was sold to West Bromwich Albion in January 2001, Flahavan returned to Portsmouth's goal and was part of the regular team until the end of the season, which, as in previous years, narrowly secured relegation in the First Division .
In the early morning hours of August 5, 2001, Flahavan had a fatal accident when he lost control of his car at high speed while under the influence of alcohol (2.2 per thousand) near Bournemouth . He had played a total of 106 competitive games for Portsmouth, both Portsmouth FC and Southampton FC did not award him the shirt with the number 1 for the 2001/02 season in his honor.
