The James M. Shuart Stadium is a stadium in Hempstead on Long Iceland in the US - State of New York . The sports facility is located on the campus of the private Hofstra University and is used by the university's sports teams, Hofstra Pride, among others. Until 2002 the facility was called Hofstra Stadium . Today it is named after the university's former president, James M. Shuart, who held the post from 1976 to 2001. The stadium currently has 11,929 seats.

history

After construction began in 1962, the Hofstra Stadium was opened the following year. Until 1967 the playing field consisted of natural grass . In 1968 an artificial turf (AstroTurf) was laid. This made Hofstra Stadium the third college stadium in the United States, after the Astrodome of the Houston Cougars and the Memorial Stadium of the Indiana State Sycamores , an artificial turf pitch. In 1971 the stadium hosted the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. Before 5,458 the Cornell Big Red won the final against the Maryland Terrapins 12: 6.

The NCAA American Football Team ( CAA ) of Hofstra University used the facility until it was closed in 2009. Today the university’s lacrosse teams are based in the stadium. In addition, the use of New York Lizards of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) since 2009 as a home after they have fought out 2,001 to 2,002 parts in James M. Shuart Stadium.

From 1972 to 1973, the football contributed franchise New York Cosmos of the NASL his games from Hempstead. The newly founded New York Cosmos ( NASL ) franchise has been back at the facility since 2013 ; this agreement was signed on September 25, 2012.

In August 1994 Hofstra University announced the renovation and expansion of Hofstra Stadium from 7,000 to 15,000 seats. The renovation for nine million US dollars was completed in the fall of 1996. In addition, an office building for the sports departments and a new press and club seating area were built on the west tier, a new stadium facade and two new entrance areas to the west and south, the Howdy Myers Pavilion was built in the south-west corner and two new changing rooms and a new display board were installed set up at the open south end and installed a floodlight system that enables television broadcasts.
