The Portland Timbers were an American soccer team from Portland, Oregon , who played in the North American Soccer League from 1975 to 1982 .

history

In January 1975 NASL awarded an expansion franchise to Portland. The name was chosen on March 8, 1975 after receiving over 3,000 suggestions. The team started playing in the same year and was able to reach the final of the Soccer Bowl straight away. There they lost to the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-0. During that season, the team gained great popularity in Portland. This is where the nickname "Soccer City USA" results.

In 1976 and 1977 the play-offs could not be reached. Even in the next few years, the team did not make it to the final of the play-offs. In 1982 the Timbers disbanded.

In 2001 a new team was formed, which again took the name Portland Timbers and has been playing in Major League Soccer since the 2011 season .
