Garry Ayre (born October 12, 1953 in Vancouver ) is a former Canadian football player. In 2005, the 15-time national player and 1976 Olympian was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame .

Club career

Ayre, who spent some time with the English clubs Hull City and Oxford United in 1970 , initially played for the New Westminster Blues in Canada . In 1977 he signed a professional contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American Soccer League (NASL). After 38 appearances for Vancouver, he was transferred to New York Cosmos in 1978 , where he won the Soccer Bowl in 1978 alongside stars such as Carlos Alberto , Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia and participated in tours to Europe and South America at the end of the season. From 1979 to 1980 Ayre, who was often used as a special guard for the opposing playmaker, still played for the Portland Timbers in the NASL, but at the same time began playing indoor soccer in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) at the Wichita Wings . In 1981 he had to end his career as a player for the MISL team Baltimore Blast because of a knee injury.

National team

Ayre made his debut in October 1973 in a friendly against Luxembourg in the Canadian senior team . In addition to seven other friendlies (and a few unofficial games), the defender also played seven games in qualifying for the 1978 World Cup .

In 1975 Ayre took part with the Canadian Olympic selection at the Pan American Games in Mexico, after being sent off in the second preliminary round match against Argentina, he was no longer used in the second round. A year later he was part of the Canadian squad for the 1976 Olympic football tournament and was used in both games against the Soviet Union and North Korea in the preliminary round.
