Robert Pires (born October 29, 1973 in Reims ) is a former French football player . He has a Portuguese father and a Spanish mother and has both French and Portuguese citizenship. His Portuguese surname is often spelled Pirès , based on the French pronunciation . Pires could play both behind the tops and on both flanks.

Career

Pires, whose mother is Spanish and whose father is Portuguese, played at Stade Reims when he was young . In 1991 he made his debut in the league team at the age of 17 and scored two goals in five appearances. In 1992 he got a contract with FC Metz . In 1996 he was the French soccer cup winner , in 1998 he was runner-up in Ligue 1 . For the 1998/99 season he moved to Olympique Marseille and was again runner-up. In the 2000/01 season, Arsène Wenger brought him to Arsenal in the Premier League . There he was English football champion in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons , 2000/01 and 2004/05 it was enough for second place in the table. He was also voted England's Best Player of the Year in 2002.

The highlight of his club career could have been the participation in the 2006 Champions League final . There he had to leave the pitch after 20 minutes, as he was substituted for substitute goalkeeper Manuel Almunia after a red card against Jens Lehmann . Immediately after the final, his move to Spain to the semi-final opponent FC Villarreal became known. From August 2006, Pires suffered from a serious knee injury and was out for six months. After his contract was no longer renewed, he had been without a club since summer 2010.

On November 16, 2010 it was announced that Robert Pires signed a contract with Aston Villa until the end of the season , with which he returned to the Premier League . In 2011 he ended his active career.

Pires, who had kept fit with the first team of Arsenal FC, entered the Indian Super League at FC Goa in 2014 .

At the end of February 2016, Pires announced the end of his career.

Pires became a football commentator for BeIN Sports , and in 2019 he switched to Canal + .

National team

Pires has made 79 appearances for France . He made his debut on August 31, 1996 against Mexico . Pirés was world champion in 1998 , European champion in 2000 and won the Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003 . In 2001 he was named the best player in this competition.

At the European Championships in 2004 he came with France in the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated 0-1 against eventual tournament winners Greece . His last international match was against Cyprus on October 13, 2004 .
