Cities by population
The following table contains the cities with more than 40,000 inhabitants, the results of the census (VZ) of January 12, 1989 and a calculation for January 1, 2010. The higher-level administrative unit is also listed, i.e. H. the province ( viloyat ) or the autonomous republic of Karakalpakistan to which the city belongs. The names of the cities are given in the Latin spelling officially used in Uzbekistan today. If there is a common German form of name, this is in brackets. The population figures refer to the respective city or municipality within its political boundaries, without politically independent suburbs.
All cities that have a provincial or direct republic status, that is, do not belong to a district ( Rajon , tuman ), are marked with an *. The capital Tashkent has a non-republican status and does not belong to any province (as a city it is on an equal footing with a province), but is in turn divided into eleven (city) districts.
All the places listed have city rights (shahar) except for Xonqa in Xorazm province , which has the status of an urban-type (or small town , shaharcha ) settlement . In addition to the cities listed, there are two more provincial cities ( Quvasoy in the province of Fargʻona and Shirin in the province of Sirdaryo ), 67 further cities that are subordinate to the district and one city that is subordinate to another city that is subordinate to the province ( Yangiobod , zu Angren ). In total there are 119 cities in Uzbekistan, one of which is independent of the republic, 26 is provincial and 92 are subordinate to a district or city, as well as 1,065 urban-type settlements.
