Kattaqoʻrgʻon ( Cyrillic Каттақўрғон; Russian Каттакурган Kattakurgan ) is a town in the Uzbek province of Samarkand , located about 65 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Samarkand . According to the 1989 census, Kattaqoʻrgʻon had 59,000 inhabitants, according to a calculation for 2009 the number of inhabitants is 76,562. Kattaqoʻrgʻon is an independent city, the district of the same name Kattaqoʻrgʻon has Payshanba as its capital.

Kattaqoʻrgʻon is located in an oasis in the valley of Serafshan on the railway line from Tashkent to Kogon . To the south of the city is the Kattaqoʻrgʻon reservoir .

Kattaqoʻrgʻon has been known since the 17th century, but according to Chinese sources the city is said to have been the regional capital after the destruction of Marakanda by Alexander the Great . An early capital of the Kushan Empire is said to have been located nearby .
