Kogon ( Cyrillic Когон; Russian Каган Kagan ; formerly Novaya Bukhara / New Bukhara ) is a city in the Uzbek province of Bukhara . According to the 1989 census, the city had 48,000 inhabitants, and an estimate for 2013 is 58,000.

history

During the Russian Civil War , Kogon served as a springboard for the Red Army to conquer the Emirate of Bukhara . In August 1920 the Red Army soldiers concentrated in Kogon.

geography

Kogon is located about 10 km east of the provincial capital Bukhara . It is the capital of the Kogon district of the same name , but it is itself a city.

Culture and sights

The Baha-ud-Din Naqschbands mausoleum is located in a religious complex near the city of Kogon . The entire facility was renovated in 2003.

Economy and Infrastructure

Kogon is an important transport hub: the city is on the Trans-Caspian Railway ; the Sharq train connects Kogon with Tashkent . From 1998 to 2008 Kogon was connected to Bukhara by trolleybus .

Events

On July 9 and 10, 2008, a large number of explosions occurred in a Kogon military base in a missile and ammunition dump. The city was initially completely evacuated. A large number of houses and the train station were damaged. According to official sources, at least three people were killed and 60 people injured. The explosions were noticeable even in the center of Bukhara and window panes were broken.
