history

Legend has it that the city was founded by Alexander the Great . He is said to have been served chicken ( murgh ) and bread ( nan ) during a stop here , from which Marg'ilon's name can be derived. More reliable sources suggest that Marg'ilon was an important city on the Silk Road on the route across the Alai Mountains to Kashgar around the 9th century .

In the 11th century Marg'ilon was the largest city in the Ferghana Valley ; in the early 16th century, Babur , the founder of the Mughal Empire , mentioned the quality of pomegranates , apricots and game from Marg'ilon. He also described the population, Sarten , as aggressive and emphasized that most of the known exorcists Bukharas and Samarkand Margilanis. At that time, the Marg'ilon businessmen were key players in the Central Asian trade. After the city was part of the Kokand Khanate in the 18th century , it was conquered by the Russians in 1876. In the Soviet era , Marg'ilon was the center of the Uzbek black market. Today the city, like Namangan, is considered a stronghold of conservative Islam .

economy

Marg'ilon, today the center of the Uzbek silk industry , is also home to Uzbekistan's largest traditional silk factory called Yodgorlik , where over 2000 workers produce 250,000 m² of high-quality silk every year. The neighboring Margilan Silk Factory produces 22 million m² of silk per year with 15,000 workers. It is not known exactly when the knowledge of silk production found its way into the Ferghana Valley, but this branch of industry has existed in Marg'ilon since ancient times.
