Chirchiq (in the Uzbek-Cyrillic spelling Чирчиқ; also Tschirtschik and Chirchik ) is an independent industrial city in the Uzbek province of Tashkent on the river Chirchiq , after which the city was named, about 32 km northeast of the city of Tashkent .

Chirchiq is located at the foot of the Chatkal Mountains at 582  m above sea level and has 145,600 inhabitants (as of 1999). The largest ethnic group in Chirchiq are the Uzbeks , followed by the Kazakhs .

Chirchiq was founded in 1935 when several villages grew together after the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Chirchiq. Chirchiq was the first industrial center to emerge around Tashkent after the latter city became the capital.

In Chirchiq, the Soviet corrective labor camp ( Gulag ) Bau-883 and ITL existed from 1946 to 1948 . The internees were forcibly employed in the construction of a production facility for deuterium oxide for nuclear reactors . The camp was at times occupied with up to 2,600 people.

Many people of German origin used to live in Chirchiq; In the meantime, however, many of them have left the city, which is why many houses in Chirchiq are empty.

The city is located in the middle of an intensively used agricultural area, in which melons and grapes and other types of fruit and vegetables are grown. Fertilizers are produced in a large chemical plant ; other important branches of industry are the manufacture of iron alloys, agricultural machinery and the chemical industry.

Chirchiq and its surroundings are an important local recreation area in Tashkent Province. The nearby Chimgon is a nationally known winter sports center.
