Angren ( Russian Ангрен ) is an independent city in Uzbekistan , 78 kilometers (as the crow flies) southeast of the capital Tashkent . It has a population of 125,149 (as of January 1, 2009).

history

The city was founded in 1942 during World War II . During the war there were some POW camps in and around the city; and Japanese prisoners of war were interned here. The prisoners of war were used to build the city. Angren received city rights in 1946.

Until the collapse of the Soviet Union , Angren was one of the more modern cities in Uzbekistan. Some suburbs were mostly inhabited by Russian Germans and are now almost deserted.

economy

Angren is a center of Uzbek coal mining, gold is also extracted . There is also a large coal-fired power station and a kaolin factory .

In parallel to coal (which is mined in open-cast mining , underground mining and underground gasification processes), other valuable minerals are mined: kaolin , limestone and quartz sand .
