The Chatkal Mountains ( Kyrgyz Чаткал тоо кыркасы ; Uzbek Chatqol tizmasi ) is a mountain range in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan .
The Chatkal Mountains extend in a northeast-southwest direction over a length of about 200 km. It is located in the far west of the Tienschan mountain system. The Chatkal Mountains limit the Fergana Valley to the northwest. In the west, the Chatkal river valley borders the mountain range. In the north it merges into the Talas-Alatau , in the northeast into the At-Oinok Mountains . The average altitude is 3500 m . However, a maximum height of 4503 m is reached in the extreme south of the mountain range . The Qurama Mountains branches off to the south . The Chatkal Mountains consist of mica slate , limestone and granite .
The mountains drop steeply to the north. The southern slopes, on the other hand, are more flat.
The lower river valley of the Chatkal with the surrounding mountain slopes is protected by the Besch Aral nature reserve . In the north of the mountain range is the picturesque mountain lake Karatokoi . In the foothills in the east of the Chatkal Mountains, there is the Sary-Tschelek mountain lake, which has been developed for tourism, in the nature reserve and biosphere reserve of the same name .
The winter sports area of Chimgon is located in the southwestern foothills of the Chatkal Mountains .
