Urganch ([ urgæntʃ ], Russian Ургенч Urgentsch ; Persian گرگانج Gorganch , DMG Gorgānğ ) is a 19th century city in Uzbekistan with 150,120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005). It lies on the left bank of the Amu Darya and is the administrative and cultural center of the Khorezmia ( Xorazm ) province . It is notto be confusedwith the similarly sounding city of Köneürgenç (Persian Gurgandsch ) in Turkmenistan .

history

The emergence of the city of Urganch goes back to the second half of the 19th century.

Transportation

Urganch is on the Makat – Farap railway line . A branch line to Khiva branches off from this to the west of Urganch station .

There has been a trolleybus service in Urganch since October 20, 1997, and to Khiva since 1998.

In the city continue to operate Marschrutki .

Sights close-by

In the city there is a "Museum of Repression", which focuses on the suppression, especially during the Stalin era, and under the amphitheater there is a small museum on Zoroastrianism, which is likely to move to new premises soon. Tourist trips to the world heritage city of Khiva are organized from the city . In the vicinity of Urganch there are former Narimanow cotton kolchos , as well as the old fortresses Toprak-kala and Koj-Krylgan-Kala in the Kysylkum , as well as Köneürgenç ("Alt-Ürgenç") in neighboring Turkmenistan. The fauna and flora of the Karakum are also noteworthy .
