Route of the Urganch trolleybus

The Urganch trolleybus runs between Urganch and Xiva . Since the end of operations in Tashkent on April 30, 2010, it is the last trolleybus operation in Uzbekistan . The length of the overland line was 36.3 kilometers in 2010, but then decreased slightly due to the route change in Urganch. Another inner city line in Urganch has been discontinued.

history

On October 20, 1997, the inner-city trolleybus operation in Urganch, the capital of the province of Xorazm , was opened with line 1 on the route between Aeroport ( airport ) and Temir Yul Vokzali (train station). Urganch was the last city in Uzbekistan in which a trolleybus service was reopened. In 1998 the overland line 2 was added to Khiva near the border with Turkmenistan . This completed the expansion of the trolleybus network.

In 2002, the inner-city line 1 was closed again, so since then only the overland line 2 has remained.

On October 26th, 2009, the government of Uzbekistan decided to close the remaining trolleybus operations in Jizzax and Namangan at the turn of the year 2009/2010 and in the capital Tashkent during 2010. The trolleybus operation in Urganch was the only one not intended to be shut down, instead nine new trolleybuses were to be purchased.

The airport's scheduled service was discontinued, but until 2010 the airport was operated if required. The regular terminus in Urganch was at the children's hospital. In 2011 the route network in Urganch was further reduced. Initially, the section from the city center to the children's hospital was omitted, which meant that the depot could no longer be reached. In 2012 the city center was disconnected from the trolleybus network. As an alternative, a new route was built west of the city center, which connects to the route to the depot, crossing the original route.

Route network

Trolleybus line 2 essentially follows the Urganch – Xiva road.

In Urganch, the original route ran on the city's north-south axis with directional operation to bypass a park. Today's route runs further west and connects to the bus station. The final stop is just before the intersection with ul. Abulgasi Bachodirchan. From here the route runs further east to the depot, but without regular scheduled services. As in the entire network, there are no catenary switches at the terminus in Urganch, so that you turn around when you leave the catenary.

In the city center of Khiva, the course of the trolleybus route is determined by one-way streets. The final stop Xiva on the northern edge of the old town fortress Ichan Qalʼа east of the north gate. To the west of the fortress is another, unused, short stretch of road with a turning loop at the west gate. This section is not connected to the regularly used route by switches. This also applies to a short connection route, with which the regular loop trip can be shortened. Another section branches off immediately after the terminus in Khiva, but was not connected. Although it was completed by 2010, it was never connected to the network. In the meantime, it is no longer fully operational. An additional depot was also planned in this section, but construction of this was not started.

The short section to the train station (Temir Yul Vokzali), which was formerly only used by Line 1, was soon dismantled, and now nothing is left of the entire route of the former Line 1.

vehicles

For the opening in 1997, Škoda in Ostrov nad Ohří ( Czech Republic ) delivered six trolleybuses of the type 14Tr with the numbers 001 to 006 and three trolleybuses of the more modern version 14TrM with the numbers 007 to 009. The main difference between the 14TrM and the 14Tr is the matrix display on the front. However, this is not used in Urganch to display the destination. Until 2013 all nine vehicles were still in stock, then trolleybuses 001, 003 and 005 were retired.

The Škoda 14Trs are to be completely replaced by nine Škoda 24Trs , which are to be delivered from September 2013.

business

In 2010, eight of the nine existing trolleybuses were used Mondays to Saturdays, with which the only line 2 was driven at intervals of about 25 minutes. A journey takes about 80 minutes. Only seven trolleybuses were in use on Sundays. From 2011 the operation was reduced, with four to five trolleybuses were driven about every 45 minutes.

Line 2 operates from around 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. At times, trolleybuses are parked on the road during the shutdown in Xiva, otherwise they are parked in the Urganch depot.
