history

Eduard Pötzsch , German architect and pioneer of train station architecture , created the Dresden train station , the Leipzig terminus of the Leipzig-Dresden Railway as the first Central European terminus . This was located in the area of the east hall of today's Leipzig Central Station and at that time bordered on the outer buildings of the city. Although a first section of the Leipzig-Dresden Railway, reaching as far as Althen , was put into operation in April 1837 , it took until 1839 for the operating company to build the Dresden station as the “First Leipzig Central Station”. When it opened was terminal station no more than a worn oak pillars open hall, which was provided on the left and right sides with stone annexes. The train station and the associated facilities were expanded several times by the architect's signature due to the annual increase in the volume of people, mail and goods. This last happened in 1887 in order to be able to include the Leipzig-Geithainer Railway . The station building existed until 1913, its hall was 53 m long and 26 m wide and spanned four tracks (14,000 m²) without supporting columns.

The last train left Dresden station with a festively decorated locomotive on February 1, 1913 at 9:37 a.m. Shortly afterwards the buildings were demolished. The area freed up as a result was then built over with the Saxon part of the main train station.
