The Magdeburg train station was a train station in Leipzig , which served from 1840 to 1912 as the end point for the Magdeburg – Leipzig railway line .

history

The Magdeburg train station was located in the area of the east hall of today's Leipzig main station and at that time bordered the outer development of the city. It was opened on August 18, 1840 immediately to the north-west (on the left-hand side as seen from the promenade) of the Dresden train station , making it the second oldest train station in the trade fair city.

The first building, which existed until the beginning of the 1860s, consisted of a four-aisled wooden station hall, the entrance of which was symmetrically delimited on both sides by brick buildings. In front of the station concourse there was a turntable for turning the locomotives. In contemporary descriptions, the ensemble found no grace from an aesthetic point of view:

“The next oldest railway is the Magdeburg – Leipziger, whose management is based in Magdeburg. The train station is right next to the Leipzig – Dresden Railway, but it is even poorer. "

In 1862/63 the Magdeburg-Leipzig railway company built a new station building. After the nearby Thuringian train station was demolished in the course of the construction of the Leipzig main train station in 1907 , the Magdeburg train station took over its tasks for a few years. On October 1, 1912, it was the second of the train stations that were once located in the area of today's main train station to be closed and subsequently demolished.
