The Thonburi Station (: also Thon Buri Railway Station , Thai : สถานี ธนบุรี ) is a historic station building in the district of Bangkok Noi from Bangkok , capital of Thailand .

location

The train station is located next to the Siriraj Hospital in the Bangkok Noi district, directly on the western bank of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya and on the southern bank of the Khlong Bangkok Noi , where it flows into the Chao Phraya.

traffic

Here the trains ran to the west and to southern Thailand . The station is the starting point for the Southern Railway and the Thailand-Burma Railway .

The station was difficult to reach for passengers, from the center of Bangkok only with a ferry across the Chao Phraya. During the day, this ferry runs regularly from the “Tha Phra Chan” pier near the Sanam Luang to the railway pier (“Railway Pier”, Thai: ท่า รถไฟ - “Tha Rotfai”) on the Thonburi side. Today passengers can have their Songthaeos ready to take them from the pier to the new station.

history

The station was commissioned in 1900 by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) . The local Muslims were resettled, and instead of an old mosque, the king donated a piece of land on the opposite bank of the Khlong Bangkok Yai, whereupon the new mosque "Masjid Ansar Al-Sunnah" was built.

The design in the style of brick expressionism comes from the German architect Karl Döhring . During the Second World War it was used by the Japanese as a replenishment base and was therefore destroyed. After the war, Field Marshal Phibul Songkhram had the station building rebuilt in the same style.

In 2003 the actual train station was relocated about one kilometer to the west to the "Bangkok Noi" station, which has now been renamed "Thon Buri Station". The old building has been unused since then. The vacated railway area is intended for the expansion of the hospital, the historic station building is to be integrated into the extension of the Siriraj hospital.

Others

The disused train station served as the backdrop for the fictional historic train station in Agra in the 2003 film Around the World in 80 Days by Jackie Chan .
