history
The castle was built by the Normans shortly after the conquest of the region, but experienced the greatest importance under Bernard de Bailleul in the second half of the twelfth century. The castle remained in the possession of the Balliol family, whose most famous and most important member was John Balliol, King of Scotland . A later owner was Richard Neville , the Earl of Warwick. His daughter Anne Neville bequeathed it to her second husband, later King Richard III. After his death in 1485 the castle fell into disrepair.
Walter Scott came to the area on frequent visits to his friend John Sawrey Morritt's and loved Teesdale. He begins his poetic work Rokeby (1813) with a man who is on guard duty on the round tower of Barnard Castle.
Charles Dickens and his illustrator Hablot Browne stayed for research purposes in Barnard Castle in the winter of 1837-38 to collect material for the novel Nicholas Nickleby . They also processed impressions from Barnard Castle in other works.
