Egglestone Abbey was a Premonstratensian monastery in County Durham in Yorkshire in Great Britain . It was dedicated to St. Mary and St. John the Baptist.

history

Egglestone was probably founded by Ralph de Moulton around 1190 as a subsidiary of Easby Abbey . In the complex that is still preserved today, there is nothing to indicate any significant construction work after the 13th century. This is probably due to the fact that the pen never really recovered from the devastation caused by the Scottish invasion of 1315 and subsequent military countermeasures. The cloister was built around 1195 and received a new west wing in the 13th century. The cross-shaped collegiate church received a new choir room around 1250, and chapels were added to the transept a little later. Around 1300 the nave was extended to adapt it to the choir.

The monastery was abolished in 1540 during the Reformation. The entire complex can still be seen today in ruins; larger parts of the church have been preserved best, including the large east window, the tracery design of which poses great puzzles as there was no other equivalent in the construction period.

useful information

The ruins of Egglestone Abbey were used by the BBC as a location for filming the television series " The Doctor and the Dear Cattle " in the episode "Nothing Like Experience", where they served as Raine Abbey as a backdrop for an alleged ghost monk.
