Shadwell is the name of an underground station on the East London Line ( London Overground , until 2007 London Underground ) and an above-ground station of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . Both are in the Travelcard Tarifzone 2 on Cable Street. The separate station buildings are about 50 meters apart. There is no underground connection between them, passengers changing trains have to cross the street. However, the route was shortened in the course of the renovation work in the early 2000s. In 2013, 2.029 million passengers used the station; no figures are available for the DLR station.

history

On April 10, 1876, the East London Railway opened the station. From October 1, 1884, trains of the Metropolitan Railway (MR, now Metropolitan Line ) and the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR, now District Line ) ran the route. On June 1, 1900, the name was changed to Shadwell & St George's-in-the-East . From December 2, 1906, the line was only open to freight traffic. On March 31, 1913, the MR resumed passenger traffic (the MDR had withdrawn in the meantime). In 1918 the station got its original name Shadwell back.

Since the closure of the St Mary's Curve at Whitechapel in 1941, the East London Line was operationally independent. Between March 25, 1995 and March 25, 1998, the entire line was closed to all traffic due to renovation and modernization work. On December 22nd, 2007 the subway ended, the line was completely renewed in the following two and a half years and extended at both ends. The reopening took place on April 27, 2010; since then the East London Line has been part of London Overground. On August 31, 1987, the Docklands Light Railway station opened. It consists of an island platform on a viaduct, on which the tracks of the railway line to Essex run parallel.

Shadwell and St George's East station of the London and Blackwall Railway was located around 50 meters from today's DLR station . It was opened on October 1st, 1840, closed on July 7th, 1941 and mostly demolished in 1955/56.
