Tower Gateway is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in the City of London . It is located in tariff zone 1 on the street called Minories, near the Tower of London . Tower Gateway is one of the DLR's two western end stations.

The station corresponds to the original philosophy of the DLR: uncomplicated construction and minimal equipment. It is a double-track terminal station in an elevated position with a narrow island platform and is located directly next to the tracks of the Fenchurch Street station , but the head end is on the other side of the street. Access is provided at the western end by means of escalators , an elevator and stairs. At the eastern end there is another stairway access. A pedestrian underpass leads to Tower Hill underground station .

history

When the DLR basic network opened on August 31, 1987, it was already foreseeable that the limited capacity of the Tower Gateway station would never be able to keep up with the rapid development of the financial center in Docklands (and especially Canary Wharf ). The necessary walk to the Tower Hill underground station also proved unattractive. For these reasons, a tunnel to the Bank station was built, which was opened on July 29, 1991. Tower Gateway does not directly affect this branch line; however, the junction is only a little further to the east and can be seen from the end of the platform.

Despite the opening of the line in the direction of the bank, Tower Gateway was retained and has since served as the terminus for the less popular trains in the direction of Beckton . However, all other destinations can only be reached by changing trains. As a result, the station has lost a lot of its importance, at least in rush hour traffic. From June 30, 2008 to March 2, 2009, the station was closed in order to expand it for the operation of trains with three cars.

At the site of today's Tower Gateway station, the Minories station was once located . It was the provisional terminus of the London and Blackwall Railway, which opened on July 6, 1840 (then called the Commercial Railway ). After the opening of Fenchurch Street Station a little further west in 1841, Minories Station was closed. However, it remained in operation as an alternative terminus until October 24, 1853. Until construction began on the DLR station in 1986, there were shunting tracks for freight trains at this point.
