The Sevilla Santa Justa train station is the main train station in the Spanish city of Seville , is maintained by the state-owned Adif and served by Renfe trains. With eight million passengers annually, it is the busiest train station in Andalusia and ranks third in Spain behind Madrid Atocha and Barcelona Sants . It is named after the Sevillian martyr Justa, who, together with her sister Rufina, is also the patron saint of Seville's cathedral .

On the occasion of the Exposición Universal de Sevilla in Seville in 1992 and the high-speed line Madrid – Seville to be built in this context , a new station was planned from 1986 onwards. The architecture firm Cruz y Ortiz , which was also responsible for the renovation of the Basel SBB train station , designed the new central train station in Seville, which was to replace the two previous main train stations, San Bernardo and Plaza de Armas . Construction began in 1987. On May 7, 1991, the Santa Justa train station was opened. At the same time, the Plaza de Armas station was abandoned and the San Bernardo station was replaced by a tunnel station of the same name with a connection to Santa Justa.

The station is designed as a large "entrance gate" to Seville and, like the Puente del Alamillo, is a symbol of Expo 92. In total, the station covers an area of ​​80,000 square meters. The station has a total of twelve tracks, six of which are built in Iberian broad gauge (1668 mm) and six in European standard gauge (1435 mm). The tracks are on seven platforms, which are up to 525 meters long. The station is designed as a through station. Immediately after the southern end of the station, the tracks disappear into a tunnel that leads to San Bernardo and on to the Virgen del Rocío station in the southern suburbs. To the north of the station there are extensive tracks that are used to park trains.

Long-distance transport

In long-distance traffic, Seville train station is connected to Madrid-Atocha by 11 to 19 pairs of trains daily. Another two pairs of trains run to Barcelona-Sants, they use the connecting curve between the high-speed line Madrid – Seville and the high-speed line Madrid – Barcelona south of Madrid. There is also a daily connection to Valencia Joaquín Sorolla , which is offered in both directions. All of these connections use the regular-lane station section. Four daily pairs of Alvia trains run between Madrid and Cádiz , they use the lane change facility in Majarabique and therefore stop in the broad-gauge part of the station. There is also a daily Alaris connection to Barcelona-Sants, which runs along the coast and also serves Córdoba , Valencia and Tarragona .

Media Distancia

Sevilla Santa Justa is the hub of the Andalusian Media Distancia network. A total of eight lines connect the station with Cádiz, Jaén , Málaga , Almería and Huelva . Line 84 to Málaga is marketed as Avant because it only uses high-speed lines, but is not part of the AVE network due to the short distance between the two end stations.

Cercanías

The station is the hub of the Sevillian Cercanías network . All five lines (C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, C-5) serve the station. Lines C-1, C-4 and C-5 use the adjoining tunnel via San Bernardo as a trunk route, the others start in Santa Justa and head north. Some of the lines are over 100 kilometers long and have the character of regional trains rather than S-Bahn trains.

future

It is planned to connect the station to the planned Line 2 of the Seville Metro . So far, Santa Justa has no direct subway connection, the closest station on the only operating line 1, Nervión , is around 1.5 kilometers to the south.

An extension of the high-speed line from Madrid to Huelva (and with a possible continuation towards Portugal) is also being planned. However, the project is highly controversial, as the continuation should lead through the Coto de Doñana National Park . A construction is therefore not expected in the next few years.
