The Valencia Norte station ( Estación del Norte , Estacio del Nord ) is the main station of the Spanish city of Valencia . It is where all the Iberian-gauge railway lines meet ; the standard-gauge tracks end at Valencia Joaquín Sorolla station . Contrary to what the name suggests, the train station is in the south of the city center. The local bullring is in the immediate vicinity.

history

After eleven years of construction, the station was opened in 1917 by the Ferrocarrils del Nord railway company as a terminus , after a station had existed at the same location since 1851. After the nationalization of the railway company, the station came into the possession of RENFE in 1987 , and after the division of operation and infrastructure ordered by the EU, the Spanish infrastructure company Adif is now responsible for operations at the station. In 1987 the station building was placed under a preservation order and designated as a "building of national importance".

With the opening of the regular-gauge high-speed lines Madrid – Levante and Valencia – Alicante with the interim station Valencia Joaquin Sorolla , the Estación del Norte suffered a slight loss of importance in long-distance traffic, but remains the city's largest train station. In addition to the newly introduced AVE to Madrid , the Euromed long-distance trains also run between Barcelona and Alicante and Alaris from Joaquin Sorolla. Due to the location of the lane-changing facility, the standard lane routes towards Madrid and Alicante cannot be reached from Valencia Norte without additional shunting trips.

In a project originally estimated for 2014, the two train stations in Valencia are to be merged to form the new Parc Estació , with the reception building of the Estació del Nord being retained.

traffic

RENFE is responsible for the operational traffic on the ten tracks.

Long-distance transport

Broad-gauge long-distance trains of the Talgo brand now operate from Valencia Norte . They connect Valencia with Barcelona Sants and Barcelona França on the one hand and Murcia , Granada , Seville Santa Justa and Cartagena on the other.

Media Distancia

In RENFE's Media Distancia traffic, Valencia Norte is only served by Intercity and Regional Exprés trains; they run to Cartagena, Zaragoza, Madrid-Chamartín , Madrid-Atocha , Alicante, Murcia and Barcelona-França.

Cercanias Valencia

Valencia Norte is served by four of the six lines of the suburban railway Cercanías (Rodalies). The other two are currently starting due to construction work at the Valencia-Sant Isidre train station , currently without a connection to the rest of the rail network.

  • C6: Valencia Norte – Castellón de la Plana

metro

In the vicinity of the station there are three stations of the Valencia Metro , Xàtiva , Bailén and Plaça d'Espanya , which are served by lines 1, 3 and 5. With Line 1, the other two terminal stations in Valencia, Joaquín Sorolla and Sant-Isidre , can also be reached without changing trains.

Transfer to Joaquin Sorolla train station

Since 2010, the Valencia Joaquin Sorolla train station has been located 800 meters south of the Estación del Norte for high-quality long-distance traffic. Although the tracks leading to the north run past this, the new station has no through platforms, so there is no direct rail link between the two stations. The crossing takes place on the one hand via a signposted footpath, on the other hand with the metro line 1, which is used between Jesús-Joaquin Sorollà and Plaça d'Espanya .
