Liège-Guillemins in 2013

The Liège-Guillemins train station is the main train station in the city of Liège in the Belgian Wallonia region . After extensive renovation and new construction in September 2009, the station in its current form is located a little outside the city center, in the Guillemins district. It is a stop for Thalys and ICE trains and thus a hub in the European high-speed network. It is also an important train station in the regional traffic of the NGBE (SNCB / NMBS) . It is approached by around 500 trains per day.

Reasons for building a new train station, planning

Interior of the new traffic station

With the advent of high-speed trains, the old Liège-Guillemins station was no longer considered up-to-date: the platforms were too narrow and too curved, and the entire station area looked shabby. Furthermore, the space was too tight for the increased passenger flows and there was a lack of comfort. In addition, the many level crossings restricted train traffic. In addition, the platforms were not long enough for current long-distance trains. Since it was no longer worth renovating the old station, it was decided to demolish it and build a new one.

After an international competition, the project was awarded to the architect Santiago Calatrava . Calatrava has already designed several train stations. He designed the new part of the train station Stadelhofen in Zurich , the Lucerne Train Station , the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupéry , intermodal Oriente Station in Lisbon and the new PATH -Station in New York. Calatrava will also build the new Mons train station .

The planning for the new station building began in 1996. 312 million euros were invested and, among other things, 10,000 tons of steel were used for the 200-meter-long, up and down swinging arch on the station roof, which is up to 40 m above the modernized track bed rises. The building has no external facade in the traditional sense; instead, the transition from inside to outside is seamless.

description

The new station is made of steel, glass and white concrete. It has a monumental canopy 200 m long and 35 m high. It was originally supposed to be completed in April 2006. In fact, it didn't open until September 19, 2009, two weeks after completion.

The line tracks (Aachen–) Welkenraedt – Lüttich – Brussels were moved to the north side of the station as part of the renovation. The entry speed into the station was increased from 40 to 100 km / h.

The new station has nine tracks. Tracks 1 and 2 are served by Thalys trains and the ICE International line 79; Trains to Brussels stop on tracks 3 and 4. There are five central platforms with a width of eight meters. Three platforms with a useful length of 450 meters are specially designed to hold Thalys trains running in double traction, the other two platforms have a length of 350 meters.

The new Liège train station is seen by the NGBE as a part of the modernization of the Belgian railway connections, namely in the connection of Belgium to the European high-speed network between London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne / Frankfurt. Since 2009 the travel time between Cologne and Liège has been just under an hour.

The connection of the new train station to the urban environment and the regional infrastructure is still practically unsolved. An economic and urban upgrading of the district named after a settlement of the Order of the Wilhelmites is foreseeable opposed to the interests of the current residents in affordable housing and the preservation of the previous social environment.
