Location and economy

View of Eijsden from the Dutch side of the Meuse

Eijsden is located on the Maas in the extreme south of the Limburg province, between Maastricht and the Belgian towns of Visé and Voeren . The stream Voer flows into the Meuse in Eijsden.

The A2 Maastricht – Liège motorway crosses the municipality. Eijsden has a train station on the Maastricht – Liège railway line. There are hourly S-Bahn trains of the S43 ( S-Bahn Liège ) on the Maastricht - Visé - Liège-Guillemins (- Tongeren - Hasselt) route. This traffic is operated by the Belgian railways SNCB / NMBS .

A lot of commuters who work in Maastricht live in Eijsden. Agriculture, fruit growing, horticulture and tourism are also of economic importance. The chemical factory in Eijsden, which produces zinc oxide from rock available on site , is controversial because of its environmental pollution.
