history

As early as 3150 BC BC flint was extracted here in a pit . The region on the Maastricht - Aachen military road was inhabited by farmers in Roman times. Most of the villages that are here today were created in the Middle Ages . Part of this area was acquired by a Cologne monastery in 1075 . According to the document, this monastery was called Sancta Maria ad gradus . Hence the name Margraten comes from. The municipality has only been part of the Netherlands since 1839.

US Memorial Cemetery

During the Second World War , Margraten was one of the first communities in the Netherlands to be liberated by the Allies: on September 13, 1944, the American 1st Army captured it. On November 10, 1944, part of the community was designated as the only honorary cemetery of the US armed forces in the Netherlands. The remains of around 8,800 dead are currently on the 26 hectare facility. In 2005 the then President of the United States , George W. Bush , visited the Cemetery of Honor.
