The Asenbach flood retention basin is located one kilometer south of the city center of Dingolfing and 170 meters south of the Spiegelbrunn settlement in Bavaria . It serves as flood protection for the lower, inhabited part of the Asenbachtal, especially for the Waldesruh and Herrenweiher districts as well as for the high bridge. The structure is an earth dam ; he is subordinate to the city of Dingolfing.

The Asenbach has a catchment area of 15.32 km² up to its mouth ; above the basin there are still 12 km². The basin is a dry basin and is only dammed in during high water. The stream normally flows through the 800 millimeter thick bottom outlet through the barrier and only builds up when the capacity of the bottom outlet is exceeded. This has not been the case since a few years ago the slide control for regulating the drainage was removed again.

The flood retention basin was renovated in 2003.
