Jo Bonfrere

Johannes "Jo" Bonfrere (born June 15, 1946 in Eijsden , Limburg ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach who was already the national coach of various associations in Africa and Asia. He led Nigeria's Olympic team to gold medal in 1996 .

Career

As a player, Bonfrere was active for the Dutch club MVV in Maastricht ; he also played in Belgium for VAV Beerschot . Bonfrere was a member of the national team in 1974, but was eliminated from the squad before the 1974 World Cup.

His coaching career began in 1985 as an assistant to Roda JC . In the seasons 1988/89, 1989/90 and again 1992/93 Bonfrere was coach at the Belgian KFC Verbroedering Geel . In 1996 he was responsible for the Nigerian Olympic soccer team when they won the gold medal in Atlanta . He was then employed as national coach in Qatar , again in Nigeria and in the United Arab Emirates . In 1998 and 2001 he was a brief coach at Al-Wahda in Abu Dhabi ; in the 2002/03 season he was with the Egyptian first division club Al-Ahly Cairo , where he was dismissed when he gave up the championship on the last day of the game.

In June 2004 South Korea hired him to succeed Humberto Coelho . Bonfrere and his German assistant coach Robert Jaspert confidently led the team to qualify for the 2006 World Cup , but resigned on 23 August 2005 after the association wanted to talk to him about the team line-up.

From December 2006 to early December 2007 Bonfrere coached the Chinese first division club Dalian Shide ; then he returned to his third engagement with Al-Wahda in Abu Dhabi, but was released after less than three months after his team could win only four of eight games.
