Josef Raukamp (* 4. September 1881 Linnich ; † 12. February 1960 in Schlierbach ) was from the Rhineland -derived Austrian glass artist and entrepreneur .

Live and act

Raukamp learned glass painting in the large arts and crafts company Oidtmann in Linnich, where the 80 employees included draftsmen , cutters , painters , burners and lead makers . The entrepreneur Heinrich Oidtmann , although not a glass painter himself, was interested in the old technology, published three books on it, was concerned with improving and refining the technology and expanded his knowledge through numerous trips that brought him into contact with masterpieces of old glass painting.

Raukamp became acquainted with all branches of the company, but eventually trained as a draftsman and glass painter who had to apply the black solder drawing to the piece of glass. Around 1900 he stayed in Münster i. W. and completed his knowledge in evening classes. Afterwards he came to Linz to Schürer, where after his death in 1908 he took over the artistic direction of the Upper Austrian glass painting .

In 1915, Raukamp acquired the Upper Austrian stained glass workshop, founded in 1884, from the Großmann family in Linz . After returning from the First World War , a new start was achieved in 1919 through a collaboration with his brother Wilhelm Raukamp (* 1882), who ran a glass painting business in Berlin and came to Linz after the death of his wife.

The two brothers were among Matthias May's students at this time . They realized bold designs for churches in Holland, which also attracted the attention of local church experts. The first works in Upper Austria could be realized in Vöcklabruck, but the contrast to conventional works was so great that there was an express ban on orders to the workshop, which was only lifted after several discussions with the diocesan bishop Johannes Maria Gföllner . The connection to his brother remained intact when he entered the Cistercian monastery in Schlierbach in 1923 as Father Peter .

As a member of the artists' association MAERZ , Raukamp also participated in their exhibitions.

In the 1920s and 1930s, under the artistic influence of Raukamp, designs by Robert Andersen , Karl Hauk , Wilhelm Kaufmann , Alfred Stifter and others were executed in Upper Austrian glass painting .

Together with his wife Josefa he worked on the conception of his residential and studio house on Martinsfeld between the castle and Martinskirche on the Linz Römerberg, which was built by Friedrich Gangl in 1931 according to plans by architect Josef Harwanek, Vienna.

During the Second World War, Raukamp was able to secure his glass supplies within the monastery walls from the bombing raids. In 1954 the monastery bought the stained glass, so that Raukamp, who was childless, saw his life's work in suitable hands. Father Petrus took over the management of the workshop and together with Tecelin Kummer developed it into a center of sacred art.

Artists like Margret Bilger , Rudolf Kolbitsch , Lydia Roppolt , Josef Mikl , Hans Plank , Rudolf Szyszkowitz , Adolf A. Osterider , Franz Weiss , Erika Wolf , Sr. Basilia Gürth , Georg Meistermann and others worked together in the monastery workshop and created works that demanded beyond Austria.
