Franz Weiss (born January 18, 1921 in Södingberg ; † June 4, 2014 ) was an Austrian academic painter and sculptor . Life

Franz Weiss was born as the fifth of seven children to the smallholder and carpenter Vinzenz Weiss and his wife Anna. He received his training from 1938 to 1940 in the sculpture department of the Kunstgewerbeschule Graz . He completed his military service with the mountain troops from 1940 to 1945. From 1945 he was in the sculpture department of the Graz School of Applied Arts, graduating in 1946. He was in Rudolf Szyszkowitz's master class for painting from 1946 to 1948 and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1948 until 1951, also from 1960 to 1962 with Herbert Boeckl and Albert Paris Gütersloh , graduating as an academic painter.

In addition to his artistic work, Franz Weiss led courses in reverse glass painting, woodcut and watercolor painting at the Catholic Academy in Augsburg from 1975 to 2000 and at the Cusanus Academy in Brixen from 1977 to 2007.

The artist spent the last years of his life in the senior citizens' residence in Stallhofen . Among his sponsors was Hanns Koren .

Weiss' extensive work is an expression of his artistic creativity and his faith. He portrayed nature, home and daily life in a Christian context. Visual imagination and faith combined to form a unity. He consistently stuck to the figurative nature of his representation and used practically all techniques in the fifty years of his work. From an art-historical point of view, his style is called "reduction realism". His works belong to folk art.

Think

Weiss' motives for his need to represent something were not exclusively religious. They also came from the unease about the situation of man in the present. "We have to learn to look again, as only children and very wise people can.", Said in one of his courses. Instead of success, people need purposeless action, childlike carelessness and relaxation in order to develop greater security in dealing with the world. In his courses he confirmed the actions of each participant. He encouraged everyone to continue for the joy of creating.
