Bridge over the Tiefengraben at the Steyr breakthrough

The Steyrtal cycle path (R8) in Upper Austria is 23.7 km long and overcomes 150 meters in altitude. It runs on a disused section of the Steyrtalbahn from Untergrünburg to Klaus an der Pyhrnbahn .

Route and sights

It begins in Untergrünburg near the museum train station and follows Steyrtal Strasse to Steinwänd . The path leads to the, at the other Steyr banks located, Steinbach , go through the floodplain forest along the river where it forms a nature trail . Then at a short distance past the parish church of Obergrünburg and after around 8.7 km, or 15.0 km from Klaus, directly past Leonstein Castle , a baroque complex that has been used as a children's home since 1945 . Soon afterwards, at 12.3 / 11.4 kilometers near Molln, the path crosses the Mollner Landesstraße, to the east, about 1.5 km away, is the Molln National Park Center .

The path follows the Steyr in its entire course, especially from Molln to the Steyr breakthrough , the path allows glimpses into the Steyr Gorge, which is up to 40 meters deep. At the Steyr breakthrough, the path leads over the former railway bridge over the Tiefengraben. Behind the road bridge running next to it is the Art Nouveau power station Steyrbruchbruch . Then, shortly before the Steinwänd, the pilgrimage church Frauenstein appears on the other Steyrufer . The Kremstal cycle path joins the Gasthof Steinwänd (km. 20.8 / 2.9) . After the junction at Steinwänd, the path runs along Pyhrnpass Straße to Klauser Bahnhof, the end point. The Klauser reservoir is in the immediate vicinity .

Use and structures

Several short sections serve as driveways for residents , this is indicated by cycle path signs. The former train stations Leonstein and Molln have been preserved and are now residential buildings. A bridge leads over the Schmiedleitenbach near Leonstein Castle. The Plangraben bridge shortly before the Steyr breakthrough is listed ( list entry ), as is the larger Tiefengraben bridge at the Steyr breakthrough ( list entry ). The former terminus of the Steyrtalbahn, Klaus, is still in operation today as the Klaus station of the Pyhrnbahn .

Directions

The path can be reached from the Steyr local train station with the museum train (with bicycle transport). Another option for cyclists are side roads along the railway line (17 km.). In the broader sense, these are counted as part of the Steyrtal cycle path , but there is normal traffic there.
