The Stephan's Emerald Dove ( Chalcophaps stephani ), sometimes Stephan dove called, is a kind of the genus of chalcophaps ( Chalcophaps ) within the family of the pigeons (Columbidae). It occurs exclusively in Southeast Asia .

Appearance

The Stephan's Emerald Dove reaches a body length of 24 centimeters which is slightly less than the belonging to the same genus green wing pigeon . It shows the typical compact and short-tailed physique of earth pigeons. A gender dimorphism is present. Only the male shows the distinctive, intensely green wing markings and has a pure white forehead.

The plumage is predominantly deep red-brown. The plumage on the belly is brightest. The middle tail feathers and the shoulders are the darkest parts of the plumage. Two yellow-brown bandages run across the lower back. The beak is red. The iris is dark brown. The feet are purple.

distribution and habitat

The brown-backed green-winged pigeon inhabits Sulawesi , Taliabu, Kai and New Guinea . The islands immediately bordering New Guinea and populated by this pigeon species include Misool , Salawati , Batanta , Waigeo , Yapen , Tarawai , Walis , Kairiru , Schouten , Karkar , Bagabag , Goodenough and Fergusson as well as Daru . It also occurs on the Admiralty Islands , the Solomon Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago . The species is relatively common on individual islands in its range. It is a forest-dwelling species that on many islands only occurs in the forest interior of rainforests. However, where its range does not overlap with that of the green-winged pigeon, it inhabits a wider range of forest biotopes.

behavior

The brown-backed green-winged pigeon lives mostly singly or in pairs. Larger troops only form when there are very many food resources available. It is a ground-dwelling species that searches for food exclusively on the ground. Their diet includes seeds and fruits that have fallen to the ground. It breeds during the rainy season. The clutch consists of two eggs.

Keeping in human care

The brown-backed green-winged pigeon is only rarely imported and has so far shown to be difficult to breed. Unlike the green-winged pigeon, it therefore plays a significantly smaller role in keeping wild pigeons.
