Tarawai , also called Tendanye , Tarawa and formerly Bertrand Island , is an island in the Bismarck Sea , located 19 km off the northeast coast of the island of New Guinea near the coastal town of Dagua . The larger neighboring island of Walis is about 500 m to the southeast .
The densely forested and sparsely populated island of Tarawai belongs to the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea .
