The Bismarck Sea is a small marginal sea in the Pacific Ocean .

It is located north of the island of New Guinea and southwest of the Bismarck Archipelago . The latter separates the sea from the Pacific. The sea is open to the north. To the south it is bounded by the island of New Britain and is connected to the Solomon Sea by a strait between New Guinea and New Britain, formed by the Dampier Strait and the Vitiaz Strait .

The Bismarcksee has an east-west extension of 1213 km and a north-south extension of 577 km. According to various sources, the area extends between 225,000 km² and 320,000 km². It is 2000 meters deep over long stretches and reaches its greatest depth of 2800 meters in the Manus Basin.

During the Pacific War ( World War II ) from March 2 to March 4, 1943, the Battle of the Bismarck Sea was fought in the Bismarck Sea .
