The Vitiaz Strait (English: Vitiaz Strait ) is a strait between the volcanic island of Long Island and New Guinea .
Long Island was discovered by Abel Tasman in 1643 . But he thought Long Island was part of the main island of New Guinea and did not use Vitiaz Strait . The name Vitiaz Street is reminiscent of the Russian corvette Vitjas , which passed the strait in 1872.
