MALT - for mucosa associated lymphoid tissue , engl. for "mucous membrane-associated lymphatic tissue" - is a system of nodular collections of lymphocytes . These accumulations lie under the mucous membrane of various organs , which is to be regarded as the main entry point for pathogens and therefore has a very high density of lymphocytes compared to other lymphatic tissues .

Some mucous membranes have their own names:

MALT lymphoma , which can also be referred to as extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is most common in the digestive tract (which is rare overall) . The stomach and intestines are affected in 50% of all cases.
