Steyr Working World Museum
The Steyr Work World Museum was founded in 1987 in Steyr in Upper Austria and deals with social history. In 2019 the museum was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize of the Federal Ministry for Art and Culture.
founding
The Working World Museum (MAW) in the Steyrer Wehrgraben is located in revitalized factory buildings from the mid-19th century on the Steyr River . It was opened in 1987 as part of the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition "Man-Machine Work: The Path to Industrial Society". The impetus for the idea of a museum of this kind came from the industrial museums emerging in England in the late 1970s . Due to the success of the state exhibition, the MAW was transferred to the permanent operation of a museum and was able to establish itself as an internationally recognized cultural and event center with extensive exhibitions, projects and events on socially relevant topics. In 2002 the entire exhibition area was destroyed by a flood of the Steyr, but was subsequently rebuilt.
The Museum Arbeitswelt Steyr is currently showing the exhibition WORK IS INVISIBLE. This addresses the future, present and past of work and tells how the world of work has changed over the past 150 years and how people have reacted to these changes. Looking back should serve as an aid to grasp the changes in the present and to develop strategies for the future. The exhibition was scientifically and textually accompanied by Robert Misik and Harald Welzer .
activities
The educational support of groups of visitors is of great importance in the Museum of Work. In addition to activating learning and mediation offers in the respective exhibitions, there has also been the DEMOS policy workshop since 2009. It offers political education programs on the topics of democracy, racism, migration and participation. In addition to the exhibition and mediation business, the Steyr Working World Museum regularly organizes so-called DEMOS evening lectures. This lecture series sees itself on the one hand as a critical dialogue forum on current social issues and at the same time aims to enable in-depth study of the respective exhibition contents. Previous speakers have included Oskar Negt , Karim El-Gawhary , Hans-Günter Wallraff , Stephan Schulmeister , Gudrun Harrer and Ari Rath .
Stollen of memory
Since the fall of 2013, the Lambergstollen, a former air raid shelter under the Lamberg Castle, has been hosting the exhibition Stollen of Remembrance . This focuses on the years 1938 to 1945 as well as the history of the resistance in Steyr and dealing with the Nazi past. The Mauthausenkomitee Steyr is responsible for the educational support and the Museum Arbeitswelt.
