Karim El-Gawhary ( Arabic كريم الجوهري, DMG Karīm el-Goharī ; * November 26, 1963 in Munich ) is a German-Egyptian journalist.

Life

Karim El-Gawhary was born in Munich as the son of an Egyptian and a German. He studied Islamic Studies and Politics with a focus on the Middle East at the Free University of Berlin . The journalist has been working as a correspondent in Cairo since 1991.

He writes for German-language newspapers, u. a. taz (Berlin), Die Presse (Vienna), the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung , the Stuttgarter Nachrichten , Badische Zeitung (Freiburg), Rheinische Post (Düsseldorf), Die Rheinpfalz (Ludwigshafen / Rhein) and the Bonner General-Anzeiger .

El-Gawhary worked for ARD for five years as a correspondent representative in Cairo. Since 2004 he has headed the Middle East office of ORF in Cairo.

El-Gawhary is a member of the professional association Freischreiber and belongs to the network of freelance German-speaking correspondents "weltreporter.net".

Private

El-Gawhary is the father of three children.

He is the author of four books:

  • Diary of the Arab Revolution (Vienna, 2011)
  • Woman power in Arabic (Vienna, 2013)
  • On the run (together with Mathilde Schwabeneder , Vienna, 2015)

Awards

In 2011 he was honored with the Concordia Prize for Freedom of the Press. In 2011, 2013 and 2018 he was honored as Journalist of the Year in Austria in the Foreign Policy category, and in 2013 he also received the main prize. In 2016 he was awarded the Leopold Kunschak Press Prize, and in 2018 the Axel Corti Prize .
