Freischreiber eV - Professional Association of Freelance Journalists was founded in November 2008 in Berlin and represents the interests of full-time freelance journalists in Germany . It is based in Hamburg and has around 700 members. There are several regional and five working groups across Germany. The members work primarily in the print sector, but also on radio, television and online. Freischreiber advocates a clear distinction between journalism and public relations .
Emergence
Freischreiber goes back to an initiative of journalists Kai Schächtele and Felix Zimmermann in February 2008. 150 participants met for the founding meeting in Berlin in autumn 2008. The association was officially formed because many freelance journalists feel they are not adequately represented by the unions. The founding falls at a time when freelance journalists are also becoming more important for editorial offices : They are taking on more and more tasks as publishers and broadcasters are increasingly laying off staff.
The founders criticized the fact that the working conditions for freelance journalists are deteriorating because many media companies are cutting fees and trying to integrate articles into their Internet offerings without additional fees or to sell them on to third parties (buy-out). The association does not see itself as a competitor, but as a complement to the trade unions : Freischreiber sees itself as representing entrepreneurs, which does not rule out conflicts with the trade unions. The model is the organization for freelance photographers Freelens .
Commitment
The members of Freischreiber sign the following principles: “I am committed to maintaining journalistic independence. I put dependencies and interest links open. I do not launch any PR articles disguised as journalism. I will not be paid from two sides. Such practices are incompatible with my understanding of journalism. ”The principles are quality, independence, reliability and trusting cooperation with the editorial offices.
organization
Freischreiber is managed by an eight-member board. The journalist Carola Dorner has been chairwoman since 2017 . Co-founder and journalist Benno Stieber was previously chairman. The office is in Hamburg. Freischreiber members meet regularly in many cities, including Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Leipzig, Frankfurt / Mainz, Speyer / Heidelberg and southern Baden-Württemberg. Any full-time freelance journalist who is registered in the artists' social fund can become a member. Exceptions apply to freelance journalists who v. a. work for public service broadcasters as well as for freelance correspondents working abroad . The admission committee decides on admission.
Goals and achievements
The association fights for better working and fee conditions and connects freelance journalists with one another. It offers its members advice, for example on tax and legal issues. The required by the publishers related right , he is critical of and supports the IGEL initiative. He is against buy-out contracts, represents the members in relation to the editorial offices and wants to ensure independent quality journalism . Freischreiber has developed a "Code of Fairness" as the basis for cooperation with the editorial staff.
Lobbying
Freischreiber successfully campaigned for the full distribution of the VG-Wort royalties to the authors. The association is also involved in the subjects of “labor law” and “copyright” and conducts political discussions on this.
Campaigns
With a donation campaign in June 2009 "Help Gruner + Jahr!" Freischreiber drew attention to the media company's austerity measures. In November 2009 the association organized a reading tour through Germany. Stations were Berlin, Cologne, Munich and Hamburg.
In December 2009, the association started the campaign “Without free something is missing”, which is intended to illustrate how large the proportion of freelance journalists, illustrators and photographers is in newspapers and magazines. For this purpose, the association has mirrored the pages of an issue of Zeit magazine on its website under the heading “We are 60% Zeit-Magazin” and whitewashed the texts that come from freelance journalists.
In 2014 Freischreiber parodied the quality journalism campaign of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT . The association thus drew attention to the working conditions of freelance journalists.
In 2015 Freischreiber made the extremely short-term termination of the collaboration with free at Tagesspiegel public. Since the Tagesspiegel had given losses in the advertising sector as the reason for its reaction, Freischreiber placed classifieds himself that pointed to the case. As a result, the Tagesspiegel resumed working with freelance journalists.
In 2016, Freischreiber campaigned for the free at Gruner & Jahr in the course of the debate on bogus self-employment and called for legally secure framework conditions for those affected.
Congresses
The association participated as a cooperation partner and with workshops at the 2009 annual conference of Netzwerk Recherche .
In September 2010 the first “Freischreiber Future Congress” took place in Hamburg. The congress dealt with how freelance journalists can use the media change, what opportunities and opportunities it offers and what risks are opening up. Guests were Bernhard Pörksen , Henryk M. Broder , Gabi Bauer , Lukas Heinser , Stephan Weichert .
There were further congresses in April 2016 and April 2017. Guests were u. a. Wolf Lotter , Daniela Kraus and Constantin Seibt .
Heaven and Hell Prize
Since 2011, the association has been awarding the Heaven and Hell Prize for the best supporters or worst blockers of free journalism. The award winners and the statutes of the award can be found on the Freischreiber website. With the sky prize were u. a. Brand eins , Cicero , Martin Vogel and Konrad Schwingenstein received awards. So far, the Hölle Prize winners include a. the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Tagesspiegel and the Bonner Generalanzeiger .
