Mathilde Schwabeneder

Mathilde Schwabeneder (* 1956 in Linz , Upper Austria ), after her marriage Mathilde Schwabeneder-Hain , is an Austrian book author and radio and TV journalist for ORF . Since October 1, 2007 she has been a correspondent in Rome and head of the ORF branch, which is responsible for reporting from Italy , the Vatican and Malta .

Life

Mathilde Schwabeneder grew up in the market town of Offenhausen in Upper Austria, where her grandfather, Matthias Mühlbacher, owned a sawmill. Her paternal grandfather was a baker, her father a carpenter and builder. She married for the first time when she was 19 and their son Lucas was born. She completed a speech therapy training and practiced in schools. After the divorce from her first husband, she moved with her son to Rome in 1983, where she studied Romance studies at the University of La Sapienza , where she also did her doctorate. Through her studies, in addition to perfecting the Italian language, she also acquired a good knowledge of Spanish and French, which she later benefited from on her travels and in her correspondent work. From 1992 to 1995 she worked in the German-language editorial team of Vatican Radio under the direction of Eberhard von Gemmingen . During this activity with a focus on development cooperation , she got to know Rome and the Vatican from the ground up. In 2011 she married the science journalist Bernhard Hain .

In 2018 Mathilde Schwabeneder was awarded the Human Rights Prize of the State of Upper Austria.

After her return from Rome, Mathilde Schwabeneder joined the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation in 1995 . First she worked in the areas of information and religion for the radio station Austria 1 . In 1999 she moved to ORF television in the TV main religion department. She designed reports on the topic of human rights and conducted interviews with important personalities such as the Dalai Lama , Cat Stevens alias Yusuf Islam, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai and Richard Gere . She worked as a commentator for all live broadcasts from Rome, for example at the funeral ceremonies for Pope John Paul II , about whom she also designed a large TV documentary. The inauguration of Pope Benedict XVI. and his visit to Austria were further highlights of her work. In her reportage work in the crisis regions of the world, she showed personal commitment and courage, for example when she drove to the civil war region of South Sudan in 1997 with only a cameraman to accompany her .

As an expert interviewer, Schwabeneder could also be seen on various occasions in the ORF “press hour” .
